Food security is an important issue, as it does not only affect people’s livelihood but also affects national economic development and social stability. Over the years, achieving food security has been a major challenge for many economies, especially the developing countries. However, the situation can be addressed if there is a clear understanding of the concept and factors militating against it are adequately addressed. This chapter examines the concept of food security and explores the current situation in the world with a special focus on Nigeria. It is argued that though a lot of efforts have been made by different stakeholders, much still need to be done. This is evident in the first Millenium Development Goal (MDG 1) and the World Food Summit targets, in which Nigeria achieved only 67 percent and 38 percent respectively. This situation is paradoxical, given the fact that Nigeria currently has a population of about 177.5 million people with about 65 – 70 percent in agriculture. Therefore, this work examines the multifarious factors affecting food security and suggests multi-dimensional strategies to tackle them.en_US
