Abstract

A reward system is seen to thrive only when the employees concerned construe its guidelines as fairly handled, consistent, and relevant. Therefore, this study seeks to examine whether or not reward system management plays any role in employees' job performance in Nigerian public enterprises. The specific objectives of the study were to (i) determine the relationship between elements of the reward management system and employees' job performance and (ii) examine the extent to which intrinsic and extrinsic reward influences employees' job satisfaction. The study adopted a survey research design through the use of a well-structured questionnaire to elicit the needed information from the respondents. The study adopted a census approach by using the total population of 78 staff of the organization. Correlation and Multiple regression analysis were used to test the formulated hypotheses. The result of the correlation analysis revealed that a strong and significant relationship exists between elements of the reward management system and employees' job performance; and that intrinsic and extrinsic rewards have a significant influence on employees' job satisfaction (R Square of 0.635, p-value=0.0001). The study concluded that reward management system elements have a significant relationship as well as a good influence on employees' job performance and that intrinsic and extrinsic rewards have a significant influence on employee job satisfaction. The study therefore recommended that the government should make very serious policies regarding the provision of rewards and welfare packages for employees of the government-owned telecommunication organizations if the purpose that calls for their establishment is to be achieved.
