Abstract
The discovery and development of nuclear weapons is one of the most outstanding discoveries in human history. This is because of its destructive abilities to human and material living. Thus, it has become political-economic machinery that a country may use to threaten or silence her opposition in the course of competition or rivalry. Though, Nigeria has not been attacked by an atomic bomb before nor has she possessed the atomic weapon but unfortunately over the years, she has been plagued by the dreadful monster called corruption which catastrophic effect on the people of Nigeria could be likened to the effects of weapon of mass destruction. In this respect, the paper highlights some of the destructive effects of corruption in Nigeria by presenting corruption as a cankerworm, an evil, a catastrophe, an instrument of retrogression and above all, a weapon of mass destruction. The study observed that corruption has eaten deeply into every fabric of our social living of Nigerian and has caused much decay in it. The paper recommends a general overhaul of the Nigerian social system and that corruption needs to be tackled by all and sundry in Nigeria society before it leads to the total collapse of the Nigerian social system
