Abstract

The sorry state of the Nigeria prisons and the increasing rate of recidivism have been connected with its overreliance on custodian measures in the criminal justice system. Imprisonment has always been the only major punishment for minor and serious offences. The prisons are also overcrowded with inmates awaiting trials and first-time offenders. The poor prison classification system and stigmatiation of offenders are also functions of the increasing rate of recidivissm in the country.
