ENGLISH COMPETENCE AND SEARCH FOR INFORMATION RESOURCES FOR ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT AMONG COLLEGES OF EDUCATION STUDENTS IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA

| dc.description.abstract | The study examined competence of students in English language and its relationship to effective search for relevant information resources in the Colleges of Education in Kwara State, Nigeria. Three Colleges surveyed are spread across Kwara State senatorial zones with a 250 respondents randomly sampled by using a questionnaire that was pretested and yielded 0.82 reliability value. Data collected was statistically analyzed using Pearson Moment Correlation (PMC) and frequency and percentage. Respondents were drawn from final year students across academic divisions of arts, social science, and pure sciences who have attended courses in Use of English language. The study found students with high relationship in competence in English language skills with search for information in academic pursuits. Gender and different courses of study have no relationship to search for information among students of Colleges of education in Kwara State. It is, therefore, recommended that stakeholders in the Use of English programme should make it reflect its ancillary status to general academic pursuit, and interdisciplinary collaboration should be encouraged among experts to enhance all-round resourcefulness in students.
