Abstract

Private Islamic schools are institutions owned by individuals or corporate bodies for the teaching of Arabic and Islamic studies. These schools include both traditional Qur’anic schools and modern institutions dedicated to Arabic and Islamic education. The traditional Qur’anic and Ilimi schools found in communities across Nigerian society serve as feeders for modern madaris, which award primary and secondary Arabic certificates in Nigeria. The situation is not different in Erin Osun, Osun State. This study employs a historical research method, combining observation and interviews as data collection tools, to examine the growth and development of Islamic literacy in Erin Osun, with a view to determining the extent of its development in the town. The findings reveal that the growth of privately owned Islamic schools in Erin Osun has been slow, largely due to unfavourable learning environments and related challenges. Based on these findings, the authors recommend government intervention.
