Abstract
A Pragma-Sociolinguistic Analysis of selected oral traditional poetry in Ronke Ojo-Anthony’s
Osun Sengese
Abstract
The traditional oral poetic genres epitomise the sociolinguistic background and project the cultural beliefs and value system of a given society. The aim of this study was to examine selected traditional oral poetry in Ronke Ojo-Anthony’s Osun Sengese from a pragma-sociolinguistic perspective. The data for this study constituted eight songs extracted from the movie. The movie was viewed, transcribed and translated for analysis using Searle’s (1979) Speech Act taxonomy and Hyme’s (1974) Ethnography of Communication. It was discovered that the traditional songs are not only means of entertainment but have socio-cultural and cosmological implications on the characters in the movie. Apart from this, the songs positively manifest in the lives of the characters. In conclusion, the cultural value of the society should be protected as it cosmological implications cannot be underestimated.
Key words: Speech Act, Poetry, Ethnography, Culture and Oral Tradition.
