Students’ Performance Comparison in Senior School Certificate Examinations Arabic and Islamic Studies in Kwara State, Nigeria

dc.description.abstractArabic and Islamic education are inseparable as the knowledge of Arabic Language significantly complements that of Islamic Studies. This study investigated students’ performance in Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) Arabic and Islamic Studies in Kwara state, Nigeria in 2020 academic session. This study was a descriptive study of correlation type. The population comprised all the senior secondary students offering Arabic and Islamic studies in Kwara state. One hundred and fifty-six (156) students constituted the sample size using purposive sampling techniques to pick all public and private secondary schools that have records of students who sat for both Arabic and Islamic Studies in WAEC and NECO SSCE were logically selected in the selected schools across the sixteen Local Government Areas in Kwara state using researcher’s designed proforma. Both Arabic and Islamic Studies results in WAEC and NECO SSCEs were products of standardized, norm-referenced examinations and thus considered to be valid and reliable. Research questions were answered with the percentage, mean and standard deviation, while the hypotheses were tested with the Person’s Chi- square at 0.05 alpha level, and the symmetric measure of Crammer’s V was used to determine the degree of relationship between the variables. Findings revealed that majority of students performed at the credit level (A1 to C6) in Arabic and Islamic Studies, Also, a significant correlation occurred between students’ performance in Arabic and Islamic Studies SSCE. It was therefore recommended that, both the teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies should work together to sustain students’ performance in the two related subjects.en_US
