Abstract
This paper examines the socio-economic impact of Zakat as a tool of sustaining welfare of less-privileged Muslims as it is enjoined in the Holy Qur’an. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The two objectives of the study are to examine the perspective of well-off Muslims and identify the socio-economic benefits derived from zakat relative to recipients’ welfare. 260 respondents were out of 800 targeted populations in the Kano Metropolis. A multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted: at the first stage, a purposive sampling technique was used to draw one hundred and twenty (120) well-off male and female respondents who are qualified to give out zakat and at the second stage, a cluster sampling technique was adopted to draw three hundred (140) respondents (i.e. less- privileged Muslims) who were mostly-petty traders, widows and beggars. A self-developed questionnaire tagged “Socio-Economic Impact of Zakat Questionnaire (SEIZQ)” was the instrument for data collection for the study. The administration of the instrument was done by the researchers and seven research assistants. The data collected were analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. Among the findings of the study was that Zakat is a big relief to the less-privileged recipients. Also, many well-off Muslims who give out zakat were not adequately informed as to how to accurately calculate it. One of the study’s recommendations emphasizes that the general public should be better educated about the importance of zakat through the mass media.
