Abstract

Civil service is the government workforce that covers all the ministries and the departments of the state and people who work in them in the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes. It is against this background that the paper examines the contemporary challenges of civil service in Nigeria. It is relevant to stress that the Nigerian civil service has become so tolerant that a considerable number of civil servants get themselves involved in politics which in turn is making the civil service lose its actual essence. The paper therefore concludes that challenges facing the Nigerian civil service are poor attitude to work by civil servants, poor remuneration, indiscipline, undue politicization/political interference, corruption, ineffective service delivery among others. Hence, it is recommended that government, as a matter of concern, should deploy ways in which civil servants can be properly remunerated and serious matters relating to bribery and corruption should be treated with high sense of responsibility and accountability.
