VALUES PRIORITIES AND IN-SCHOOL ADOLESCENT LIFESTYLES IN ILORIN METROPOLIS, NIGERIA

dc.description.abstractValue is the important concept in human society as it has the tendency to affects the attitude, behaviour, the choice of career and the decisions we make almost every day. The behaviours we showcase or exhibit in everyday life are the reflections of beliefs and value we held. This study, therefore, was conducted on the correlation between values priorities and in-school adolescent lifestyles in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria. The research design adopted was the descriptive survey of correlational type. The population for the study was all in-school adolescents in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria. A total number of three hundred (300) in-school adolescents were sampled for this study using a simple random sampling technique. A researcher’ designed questionnaire was used for data collection while the data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used to test the hypothesis postulated at 0.05 level of significance. Findings from this study revealed that achievement, self-direction, security, power, stimulation, hedonism, and conformity were the values prioritized and considered most important among in-school adolescents in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria. However, values such as tradition, benevolence and universalism were considered less important compared to others; it was discovered that majority of in-school adolescents always engage in cognitive orientation, family-sentimental style, hedonistic orientation and orientation to popularity in their endeavours but sometimes engage in substance abuse and clubbing in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria; there was a significant correlation between values priorities and in-school adolescent lifestyles in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria. It was therefore recommended among others that parents should make efforts to instil the right type of values in their children and motivate them to prioritize its elements so as to positively shape their lifestyles; teachers should embed values in their relationship with in-school adolescent (students) because they are role models to students; students should engage in lifestyles that are conformity with societal/national values; there is a need to make available and adequate up-to-date teaching and reading materials for students and teachers to facilitate the implementation and attainment of religion and national values curriculum.en_US
