dc.description.abstractThe study examined risk factors for diabetes disease as perceived by undergraduates in University of Ilorin. The purpose of the study investigated whether: (i) genetic: (ii) obesity; and (iii) physical inactivity were risk factor of diabetes disease. descriptive research design of survey type was employed for the study. The population of the study comprised all undergraduates in University of Ilorin. A Multiple-stage sampling techniques comprising simple random sampling, proportionate sampling and accidental sampling techniques were used to select 394 respondents that participated in the study. Researcher developed questionnaire validated by 3 experts from relevant field was used as an instrument for the study reliability of the instrument ascertained through test re-test method while its reliability was obtained using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC), correlation coefficient of 0.77r was obtained. inferential statistic of Chi-square used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The finding of the study revealed that genetic and physical inactivity were risk factors of diabetes disease (316.07 >16.92, 48.18> 16.92), obesity was not a significant risk factor of diabetes disease as perceived by undergraduates in University of Ilorin (14.15 <16.92). The researcher concluded that genetics and physical inactivity were risk factor of diabetes while obesity was not a risk factor of diabetes as perceived by undergraduates in university of Ilorin. The researchers recommended among others that health educators should enlighten students on the advantages of regular medical check-up in the hospital as one of the important measure to assist family with a member that experiences diabetes disease. Student should also be educated on risk factors for diabetes as empirically confirmed.en_US
