Abstract
Physiological characteristics are are those variables that are directly linked with functioning of various organs and systems such as heart rate, maximum oxygen uptake, blood pressure, vital capacity, stroke volume and lung capacity. This study focused on comparison of physiological characteristics of male racket game players in University of Ilorin. The variables investigated were; heart rate, maximum oxygen uptake (v02max)and blood pressure. Ex-post facto research design was adopted for this study. The population comprised male racket game players in university of Ilorin. Stratified sampling technique was adopted to select 18 athletes for the study. The measurements were taken using digital sphygmomanometer for blood pressure and heartrate and 12-minutes Cooper test for v02max. Data collection was conducted by the researchers and two research assistants. Mean and standard deviation was used for the demographic data of the respondents, the tree null hypotheses were tested using one way analysis of variance at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that there were significant differences in the heart rate and v02max of the participants, while there was no significant difference in the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Based on the findings, the study recommended that racket sports coaches should pay more attention to developing specific fitness fitness programmes into their training schedule so as to improve athletes' physiological characteristics to attain peak performance. The study further recommends that players should maintain their systolic blood pressure within the range of 106-120 and 70-80diastolic blood pressure to maintain optimal performance.
