Poetry is an important aspect of the literary tradition of any culture. In Arabic language, it is considered to be a repository of the Arab history, values and norms. This explains why the Arabs celebrated the emergence of a new poet in a family, tribe, or clan. In Nigeria, despite the belief that Arabic poetry is a difficult art, Arabic poetry has reached a greater height in both quality and quantity, especially during period which is considered as the period of “efflorescence” of Arabic literature in Nigeria. The aim of this study is to evaluate the contributions of Ilorin scholars to the growth of Arabic poetry. To achieve this, the study is divided into four sections. The first section gives a brief history of Ilorin and the growth and development of Arabic Language in the ancient city. The second section deals with the efforts of Ilorin scholars in the study and preservation of Arabic Poetry. The third section discusses how Arabic poets emerged in Ilorin; while the fourth section concentrates on Ilorin verse authors in Arabic. The conclusion is a summary of the study and its findings.en_US
