Abstract
Nutritional status of pregnant women is of great importance because of the influence it has on the health of the fetus. This study examined the Socio-cultural factors influencing the nutritional status of pregnant women attending Sobi, Specialist Hospital Ilorin. Descriptive research design of survey type was adopted and the population comprised all pregnant women attending the Hospital. Purposive sampling technique was used to select one hundred and ninety-two (192) respondents from all the pregnant women attending antenatal clinic. Researcher designed questionnaire, validated by experts and tested for reliability, which yielded 0.086r was used for the data collection. Inferential statistics of Chi-square was used to test the three postulated null hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The results revealed that educational status, occupation and culture significantly influence nutritional status of the pregnant women. It was recommended that, seminar, health counseling and workshop should be used to educate expectant mothers on the importance of balanced diet during antenatal and postnatal periods. Efforts should be made in the family to provide adequate nutritional diets to the expectant mothers
