Abstract
The discourse on gender equality has increasingly gained traction among
education policymakers over the years. This study examined effective
strategies for promoting gender equality among basic school pupils in Ibadan
metropolis, Oyo state, Nigeria. Descriptive design was employed in this study.
The study population consisted of all basic schools in rural communities in
Ibadan, Oyo State. A sample of 150 teachers was selected for this study, using
probability random sampling techniques. Data gathered in the survey were
analysed using percentages, mean, and standard deviation to answer the
research questions. The findings revealed a significantly poor perception of
gender inequity at the basic school level, with teachers observing high
incidences of unequal treatment between boys and girls. Consequently, the
study outlined strategies to address these issues, including emphasising
education on gender equality, enforcing protective laws, ensuring equal access
to leadership roles, and promoting gender-equitable school policies and
activities.
