Pleural lesion of inflammatory origin is referred to as pleurisy. When there is no significant exudative pleural fluid accumulation associated with such a lesion, it is called dry or plastic pleurisy. On the other hand, pleural inflammation (frequently parapneumonic), associated with an appreciable accumulation of sero-fibrinous fluid is simply referred to as pleural effusion. A pleural effusion of purulent nature is otherwise known as empyema thoracis, or purulent pleurisy. In this section, the common paediatric inflammatory disorders of the pleura and their complications are discussed.Pleural disordersPleurisy, Pleural effusion, Empyema, Pneumothorax and PneumomediastinumBook chapter
