It is established that community organisations bring about rural development. Bringingpeople together, helping the community realise both its stren~th and weaknesses, helping rural people develop on their own with or"without any external forces or outsider, increasingthe social bond among individuals and groups are prerequisites to rural development, especially in a developing country like Nigeria. However, community organisations do come with a co~t. Government may use it as an excuse to neglect their own responsibility of providing for the welfare of the rural people. Nevertheless, several studies haveshowed that community organisationsare important tools in rural development in developing countries. There have been various programmes of rural development in Nigeria, but the majority of these programmes, if not all, have met with many obstacles and hindrances.enCommunity Organisation and Rural DevelopmentBook chapter
