An advert requires a codified language; the advertising man knows his audience, chooses a language, decides on the appropriate medium and adopts a style that will carry his message across to the target public. This paper, which analyzes data collected from billboards and vehicles on major roads in Lagos, Ibadan and Ilorin, investigates the syntactic structures of the message of outdoor advertisement. The types and structures of the phrases and sentences used in outdoor advertising are examined using the Principles and Parameters Theory.
