This study employed the combination of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to select the most suitable location for a landfill in Ilorin, Nigeria. GIS was used to digitize all the spatial features related to landfill selection while excluding unsuitable areas. A total of eleven potential landfill sites were identified from GIS analysis and an AHP model was developed to rank these sites. The AHP model rated Candidate site 10 as the most preferable landfill site after trade-offs between key environmental factors such as slope, area and proximity to major road, pipeline, airport, railway line, built-up areas and water bodies. This illustrated approach makes it very easy for environmental planners to spatially buffer unsuitable locations for landfills, identify criteria priorities, and select the most suitable site under each criterionSolid wastelandfillGeographic Information SystemAnalytic Hierarchy Processenvironmental factorsA GIS-AHP based approach for siting municipal landfill in IlorinArticle
