Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, 2010) Adebayo, Babatunde SamsonItem Comparison of physiological characteristics of male racket game players in University of Ilorin(Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, Faculty of Education, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, 2019) Adebayo, Babatunde SamsonPhysiological characteristics are are those variables that are directly linked with functioning of various organs and systems such as heart rate, maximum oxygen uptake, blood pressure, vital capacity, stroke volume and lung capacity. This study focused on comparison of physiological characteristics of male racket game players in University of Ilorin. The variables investigated were; heart rate, maximum oxygen uptake (v02max)and blood pressure. Ex-post facto research design was adopted for this study. The population comprised male racket game players in university of Ilorin. Stratified sampling technique was adopted to select 18 athletes for the study. The measurements were taken using digital sphygmomanometer for blood pressure and heartrate and 12-minutes Cooper test for v02max. Data collection was conducted by the researchers and two research assistants. Mean and standard deviation was used for the demographic data of the respondents, the tree null hypotheses were tested using one way analysis of variance at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that there were significant differences in the heart rate and v02max of the participants, while there was no significant difference in the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Based on the findings, the study recommended that racket sports coaches should pay more attention to developing specific fitness fitness programmes into their training schedule so as to improve athletes' physiological characteristics to attain peak performance. The study further recommends that players should maintain their systolic blood pressure within the range of 106-120 and 70-80diastolic blood pressure to maintain optimal performance.Item The critical role of Pedagogy in the formulation of theories for the teaching of Physical Education and Sports(Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, Faculty of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, 2021-10-23) Adebayo, Babatunde SamsonA spectrum of teaching styles was developed in the mid 1960s with a view to create some cohesiveness around teaching behaviour. The spectrum was designed not with the intent of prescribing specific teaching practices for the teachers, but as a prompt for teachers to reflect on their teaching act. This study analyzed the critical role of pedagogy in the formulation of theories for the teaching of Physical Education and sports. The ways in which people think about pedagogy are underpinned or informed by particular knowledge paradigms and ways of perceiving the world. The review covered conceptual orientations on pedagogy from science and didactic perspectives including learning and behaviourism theories. Briggs (2003) 3p model was adapted; the model examined the interrelationships of presage, process and product variables in the teaching learning process. The study concluded that personal development is a perquisite for effective teaching because different orientations and approaches exist. Thus, it could be asserted that teaching theories in physical education and sports are founded on pedagogical knowledge of teachers, therefore, whatever theory the teacher adopts, the root is traceable to pedagogy.Item Effect of mental skills training programme on attentional direction of amateur athletes in Ibadan, Oyo State(Department of Kinesiology, Health Education and Recreation, Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Nigeria, 2018) Adebayo, Babatunde SamsonSports competitions are usually loaded with stresses which are the processes involving substantial incongruencies between demands and response capacities. Many of the non-elite athletes have entered into competitions without adequate psychological preparations which have negatively impacted on their performance in crucial competitions. Athletes therefor need psychological conditioning (mental skills training) to be able to attend to the psychological demands of competition. This study therefore examined the effects of mental skills training on attentional direction of non-elite athletes in Ibadan, Oyo State. Pre-test post-test experimental design and systematic random sampling technique was adopted. Sample comprised 63 non-elite athletes while structured questionnaire adapted from Test of Performance Strategies (TOPS) developed by Thomas, Murphy and Hardy (1999) was instrument used for data collection. Parametric statistic of Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level level. This study concluded that coaches and sports psychology experts should consider the task outcome of performance on athletes while administering psychological interventions on athletes in order to direct attentional focus and increase arousal during performance. It was recommended that athletes and coaches should be enlightened that mental skills are acquirable, hence mental skills training should be taught to athletes the same way physical skills in various sports are taught to enhance athletes’ performance.
